Stalked by Night

By Heather Marie Adkins

Cover Reveal

Blurb

In a quiet corner of the English countryside, an ancient temple to the Mother Goddess has survived for centuries in the care of supernaturally talented guardians. New to their ranks is Vale Avari - a brash American who has put the Atlantic Ocean between herself and her mysterious past.

Yet all is not well in the town of Quicksilver, where unearthly sounds and sightings drive rumors of the Wild Hunt roaming the night. When temple guardians begin to disappear, Vale must discover for herself if primeval magic is really responsible, or if the culprits are all too human. Plagued by a brute with a violent history and lusting after a dark-eyed man with a secret, Vale must turn the tables and hunt the hunters, before the Hunt rides for her.

This was formerly called The Temple, but has been updated, including new name and cover.

Thanks to SCD Goff for allowing me to read this book and give my honest opinion
Synopsis:
After her Uncle Malachy terrifies Evangeline Languish on her 16th birthday, she is abandoned at a boarding school by her parents. But when Evangeline discovers a strange young man, injured and alone, she is forced to change her mind about everything she knew.
Could Malachy's stories be true? Evangeline must face her uncle once more ... can she get to him before he kills everything she loves?
.
Review:
As many of you know I'm not a big fan of vampire books, I've read so many and after a while they all read more or less the same. But I was honoured to be asked to read Lady Languish and after being told it was more in the same vane as the great Dracula I happily obliged. But nothing could have prepared me for the most beautifully written piece that should surely go down as proper YA literature. SCD Goff has such a way with creating imagery that once I was into the story I felt my world around me dissolve and I was actually in the story as an observer. Not many authors have this strong writing ability but if that isn't recommendation alone to read this wonderful piece then I don't know what is!

Lady Languish is the story of a young girl, Evangeline Languish. Her privileged upbringing and doting parents have kept her away from all forms of society, even denying her the pleasures of shopping or visiting the local village except once, which caused a family uproar.
She lives in a castle on a huge estate and has yet to make any friends. Sad? Not really. At no time do you get the impression that Eva is lonely, or pining for an escape. She's content and happy with her life and truly loves her parents. An incident on her 16th birthday throwing everything into the open. An uncle, Malachy, arrives. An uncle she has never met before and one that makes her queasy when he's near. He seeks an opportunity to get her on her own and then makes her drink a red liquid that she's never drunk and almost instantly she feels awakened. The uncle gets sent from the castle immediately but shortly after, and without any explanation, Eva is sent to St Rita's boarding school.

Sooner after she hears about the death of her parents and after arriving back at her family castle strange events start to occur. The mysterious Lorcan shows up, injured beyond measure and she takes taking him back to the castle to get proper care. Soon she realises that he's not normal and he in turn predicts that her life is in incredible danger. A vampire hierarchy going back to the first vampires is now under the leadership of Slane, a young power-hungry woman whose second in command is none other than her uncle Malachy. And Slane wants Eva dead.

This isn't a story that has been rushed in any way. The pace doesn’t canter along losing your perspective and instead you get to savour the different characters, all well thought out and that spring to life in the story at opportune moments. Especially Eva's friend from school, Sive. I have a soft spot for her. Sive's father was a close friend of Eva's parents but little did Eva know this until their terrible death. Sive doesn’t shirk at the sound of danger; she helps Eva unravel the conspiracies occurring with the aid of Ann, the housekeeper who enlightens Eva to her past.

Another great character was Lorcan that I loved. His history is undeniably horrid, and he's tortured by his past life. But slowly he begins to open up a little with Eva and there's a connection that neither of them expected.

And the bad guys? They are really bad and nasty. I even felt scared just reading about them!

The book is set in Ireland which helped create such a stunning, almost Gothic, backdrop inviting in the beautiful descriptions that take you to another place entirely, and Eva has to be one of the loveliest heroines I've ever read. And if you think she's had her fair share of heartache then just wait till you get to the end. An ending that will lead you to desperately wanting the second book!

It isn't often that I gush about a book but there aren't enough good words to say about Lady Languish. This is definitely one of my books of the year so far.

Synopsis:

Whitney Denison can’t wait to start over.

She thought she had everything under control, that her future would always include her best friend Katie… Until everything changed.

Now her life in Bloom is one big morning after hangover, filled with regret, grief, and tiny pinpricks of reminders that she was once happy. A happy she ruined. A happy she can’t fix.

So, she is counting down the days until she leaves home for Colson University, cramming her summer with busywork she didn’t finish her senior year, and taking on new hobbies that involve glue and glitter, and dodging anyone who reminds her of her old life.

When she runs into the stranger who drove her home on graduation night, after she’d passed out next to a ditch, she feels herself sinking again. The key to surviving the summer in Bloom is unraveling whatever good memories she can from that night.

But in searching for answers, she’ll have to ask for help and that means turning to Evan, the stranger, and Kyle, Katie’s ex-boyfriend. Suddenly, life flips again, and Whitney finds herself on not only the precipice of happy but love, too, causing her to question whether she can trust her feelings, or if she is falling into her old patterns of extremes.

As she uncovers the truth about her memories, Whitney sees that life isn’t all or nothing, and that happy isn’t something to wait for, that instead, happy might just be a choice.

Review:

I liked this book. It mainly dealt with real life teenage issues, mostly alcoholism and dealing with death of a loved one. One significant party in particular led to Whitney losing her memory completely, wrecking her car, and resulted in seeing her dead best friends ghost.

For me this was one I had to see through to the end. Not only to piece all the puzzle parts together but also to find out how Evan was involved with the great mystery.

My only problem was the length of the book. The narration did ramble a lot, and various topics were discussed at length repeatedly at various stages of the book. Katie was mentioned on nearly every page which brought me to believe Whitney actually had a very unhealthy relationship with her so called best friend before she died. Again this is discussed many times and is drawn out in the conclusion of the book.

This more of a journey to travel along, not an romance discovery themed book as I originally thought but still definitely worth a read.

Review: My Life After Now by Jessica Verdi

My rating: 4 out of 5

Synopsis:

Lucy just had the worst week ever. Seriously, mega bad. And suddenly, it's all too much—she wants out. Out of her house, out of her head, out of her life. She wants to be a whole new Lucy. So she does something the old Lucy would never dream of.

And now her life will never be the same. Now, how will she be able to have a boyfriend? What will she tell her friends? How will she face her family?

Now her life is completely different...every moment is a gift. Because now she might not have many moments left.

Review:

Its always difficult to rate a book when not only is the subject sensitive but the subject matter isn't exactly one that I would chose to read for entertainments sake. That is why we read after all, right? To be entertained.

My Life After Now is an incredibly touching story about Lucy. She's a member of her schools drama group. Her boyfriend of eighteen months also attends. A casting for Romeo and Juliet is on the cards and the lead part doesn't go to Lucy, it goes to her girl-enemy Elyse. Her friends, Courtney and Max get her to check Elyse's Facebook status one night shortly after rehearsals start. Yep, Elyse and Ty are 'in a relationship'. Lucy is horrified, embarrassed and more than mortified at Ty's betrayal. That and a visit from her estranged birth mother, Lisa, has Lucy and her two friends going out and having an outrageously fun night. One thing leads to another and Lucy wakes up in a lead singer's bed naked. He's only the second guy she's ever slept with.

The story continues with how Lucy copes from here on it. It isn't that she slept with the guy. Her two dads know she was having sex. It's the consequences of not practicing safe sex. Lucy soon finds out she has HIV.

Like I wrote earlier, yes, it is a sensitive issue. All kinds of preconceptions pop into your mind when you think of someone with HIV. But what I really liked about this book was the normalcy of the situation. A girl that isn't promiscuous in any way makes one mistake one night and she's saddled with this terrible virus for the rest of her life.

Lucy takes us through the drama and crises of what happens next, and there are many. I loved her two dads and had little sympathy for her birth mother who used Dad and Papa any which way she could. Evan was a nice, kindly character to add for Lucy's new love interest. But most of all we learn about the virus itself. What are the common attitudes of people when they find out? How do you deal when someone tells you to clean up some blood and burn everything after? Or when you visit a support group and everyone tells you things you really don't want to hear?

In this story Lucy finds out she is lucky. She has tremendous support from her family and the few friends that know, but as the book tells us at the back, the statistics involving teenagers, sex and HIV are staggeringly high. As Lucy says 'it's called Safe Sex for a reason'.

So this is more of a moral journey, rather than a book to entertain you. It really is a good read, it isn't dark or gloomy and deals with the negative as well as the positive of contracting HIV.

I've given it four out of five because of the strong story line. I really did like it and it's definitely a good book to recommend all teenagers to read.

Review: Elemental: Origin (Primord #1.5) by Alexandra May

Publishers: Pauma Publishing
Published Date: April 4th 2013
From: Bought
My rating: 4 out of 5

Synopsis:

What happened to the two missing bloodlines?
How did the Xipilé’s amass their fortune?
Who was behind Mira’s accident?
And what is Amy’s secret?

Spencer Phillips, Daisy Frost, Andrew Orelían and Aiden Deverill open up their hearts and minds to reveal some of the secrets from Elemental: The First in this in-between short story.

Review:

This wasn't what I expected at all. Elemental: Origin goes behind the scenes before that last chapter of Elemental: The First with a final chapter just after. Told from 5 different side-characters, it delves into the background of the Dacomés and Xipile´s. We learn a little more about the characters and motives. The one thing Origin taught me is not to assume anything! The world Alexandra May is weaving is becoming more clearer as another book is announced. Now I can't wait for Circle of Fire! Only marked down because it's a novella and I wanted to read more!

(Primord Series #2)
by Alexandra May

Rose Frost discovers from Aiden Deverill, the bad boy around town, that they are Primord Elementals in hiding. They may be from the same group of ancients, born way before humans existed on the earth, but that doesn't mean she has to like him.

Rose wakes up one morning in hospital having no idea how she got there. She soon learns that one of the Xipilé’s is dead. Rumours circulate that she killed Spencer Phillips, Aiden’s best friend, but Rose has no recollection. Her memory of that fateful night has been erased. Spurned by her friends and hated by the other Xipilés, Rose plunges to the depths of an emotional spiral that she may never get out of. The only person who can truly help her plays with fire.

On this heroic and fast paced journey, Rose begins with a key but poignant tragedy. Her time for the Unburdening and Integration into Halíka Dacomé draws near. The impeding arrival of the outer Xipilé clade, who want her dead, is looming. Strange asteroids in space draw in a new 21st century world-wide audience, linking their appearance to Halíka Dacomé. Is Ben’s plan of an apocalyptic disaster drawing near? Does he really want to rid the world of the human race and make way for the coming of the Primords?

Published Date:  May 8th 2012

My rating:
2 out of 5
Synopsis:
Mia Price is a lightning addict. She’s survived countless strikes, but her craving to connect to the energy in storms endangers her life and the lives of those around her.

Los Angeles, where lightning rarely strikes, is one of the few places Mia feels safe from her addiction. But when an earthquake devastates the city, her haven is transformed into a minefield of chaos and danger. The beaches become massive tent cities. Downtown is a crumbling wasteland, where a traveling party moves to a different empty building each night, the revelers drawn to the destruction by a force they cannot deny. Two warring cults rise to power, and both see Mia as the key to their opposing doomsday prophecies. They believe she has a connection to the freak electrical storm that caused the quake, and to the far more devastating storm that is yet to come.

Mia wants to trust the enigmatic and alluring Jeremy when he promises to protect her, but she fears he isn’t who he claims to be. In the end, the passion and power that brought them together could be their downfall. When the final disaster strikes, Mia must risk unleashing the full horror of her strength to save the people she loves, or lose everything.
Review:

Very disappointed with this one. I was expecting something and read something else entirely. I even had this one as my Waiting on Wednesday last year.

Firstly the main character, Mia, is a lightening addict. In the prologue she introduces us to what happens when she gets struck. She feels the pain, she loses her skin but she heals really quickly. After a horrendous earthquake leaves Los Angeles in ruins, Mia and her family are coping, but barely. At school, she's introduced to the Seekers, an alternative dark version of the white Followers who are led by a self proclaimed Prophet. The two cults face off through most of the book, both trying to get Mia to join them. Both sides know she is a lightening addict, in fact no one else has the skill that she's developed. She's crucial for some final plan.

I didn't expect this book to be mostly about cults, and with the Followers there's so much God talk and a little too much bible quoting. It wasn't until about 85% into the story that Mia actually got her first lightening strike. She has some pretty strong powers but she didn't use them at all until the end.

The love interest, Jeremy, was a dead giveaway. I guessed who he was. When he gives Mia his visions, and then tells her that the outcome isn't definite then why didn't she step up and deal with the Prophet before anything bad happened?

Overall, the writing is very good. The imagery is impressive. I just expected a little more lightening and drama.
